The NIU Jazz Lab Band, directed by Rodrigo Villanueva, will perform two shows Tuesday, May 3, at the Jazz Showcase, 806 S. Plymouth Court in Chicago.
Admission is $5 for students, NIU faculty and staff and musicians, and $10 for the general public.
NIU School of Music faculty Art Davis (trumpet), Kelly Sill (bass), Ron Carter (saxophone) and Tom Bough (tuba) will join the band. An NIU Alumni Jazz Band, with former members of the ensemble, also will perform.
The fundraiser event will include a silent auction, door prizes and lots of guests sitting in with the band.
The NIU Jazz Lab Band twice has won first place at the renowned University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Jazz Festival (2008 and 2010), has toured internationally in Mexico (2008), and has been featured at the Illinois Music Educators Association All-State Conference (2010).
“It is time to take the Lab Band to the next level,” Villanueva said, “and having a professionally quality CD will allow us to participate at international festivals around the globe and attract more international students to be part of the NIU Jazz Studies program.”
